Stéphane Laviolette

Political Strategic Advisor and Office Manager since 2017

Stéphane Laviolette is a Franco-Ontarian from Ottawa. He is passionate about issues related to the Francophonie, the environment and Canadian federal politics. Stéphane has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Ottawa. At the start of his career, he worked within a Ministerial Appointments Unit in the public service. After working briefly at the House of Commons, he ventured into business leading his own SME for two and a half years.

Stéphane has been involved in his community through volunteering and by sitting on a few boards of directors for not-for-profit organisations, including Tel-Aide Outaouais, Snow Pride and the Centretown Community Association. At the Senate, his points of interest are the environment, the Latin American community and international relations. Stéphane is bilingual in French and English, and has a functional knowledge of Spanish and Portuguese.

     


Cheryl Soullière, MSc., BSc. (Hons), BA., DipSustainability

Parliamentary Research Assistant since 2023

Cheryl Soullière grew up in Northern Ontario. She attended the University of Guelph earning an Honours Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and Genetics with a minor in Microbiology. After working as a Quality Assurance Technician, Laboratory Technician, and Research Technician Cheryl earned her Master of Science in Biology from the University of Waterloo. She went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, a Diploma in French Language II, and a Diploma in Sustainability, also from the University of Waterloo.

Cheryl has been involved in her community for more than 30 years as a member of Girl Guides of Canada. As an accomplished scientist with a keen interest in human societies, language, culture, environment and health, and climate change she has developed distinctive research expertise. She is passionate about sustainability, protecting the environment, food security, and equity. Cheryl’s interdisciplinary background brings a unique perspective and unparalleled skill to her work which focuses on research and analysis for committee work and communications including Op-Eds and Senate speeches and statements.

 


Tomás Nieto

Administrative Support Assistant since 2024

Tomás Nieto was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and moved to Canada at a young age. He earned an Honours B.A in Global and International Studies with a Specialization in Latin America and the Caribbean at Carleton University in Ottawa taking an interest in critical resource economics and the effects of their exploitation in the Global South.

Prior to working at the Senate, Tomás worked remotely for the International Centre for Parliamentary Studies in London, England, and the Embassy of Argentina in Canada. At the Senate, he concentrates on schedule coordination and travel and other administrative duties. He is trilingual in Spanish, English, and French with some knowledge of Portuguese.

 


Alexandra Toutant

Special Assistant since 2024

Alexandra Toutant is a lawyer who is passionate about environmental law. She earned a B.A in economics from McGill University, and her LL.L. and J.D. from the University of Ottawa. She is currently working towards her LL.M. in Environmental Law and Global Sustainability at the University of Ottawa, where she focuses on issues relating to sustainable finance, international environmental law and equality law.

Prior to working at the Senate, Alexandra worked at the Federal Court of Canada and a global law firm. She has volunteered for several legal clinics, including an environmental law clinic and a clinic for people with disabilities. At the Senate, she concentrates on research and policy analysis of environmental issues. She is bilingual in French and English.
